Radical by David Platt: A Book Review

Have you ever wondered if there is more to Christianity than going to church, reading your Bible, and being a good person? Have you ever felt dissatisfied with the American Dream of success, comfort, and security? Have you ever sensed a deeper calling to follow Jesus with radical obedience and sacrifice?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, then you might want to read Radical by David Platt. Radical is a book that challenges Christians to rethink their faith in light of the gospel and the global mission of God. It is a book that exposes the dangers of conforming to the culture and compromising the truth. It is a book that invites us to join a radical experiment of living for God's glory and His kingdom.

The American Dream vs. The Gospel

Platt begins his book by describing his own journey of discovering the radical nature of the gospel. As a pastor of a large and successful church in Birmingham, Alabama, he realized that he was preaching a watered-down version of Christianity that catered to the preferences and expectations of his congregation. He was promoting a gospel that promised health, wealth, and happiness, but ignored the cost, the cross, and the call.

He writes, "We are settling for a Christianity that revolves around catering to ourselves when the central message of Christianity is actually about abandoning ourselves" (p. 7).

Platt argues that the American Dream of pursuing prosperity, individualism, and materialism is incompatible with the gospel of Jesus Christ. He says that we have distorted the gospel to fit our culture, instead of transforming our culture to fit the gospel. He warns that we are in danger of missing the whole point of our faith, which is to glorify God and to make disciples of all nations.

The Radical Experiment

In order to help us break free from our cultural captivity and rediscover the true meaning of following Jesus, Platt proposes a radical experiment. He challenges us to commit ourselves for one year to five practices that will help us align our lives with God's purposes and priorities. These practices are:

  • Pray for the entire world

  • Read through the entire Word

  • Sacrifice your money for a specific purpose

  • Spend your time in another context

  • Commit your life to a multiplying community

Platt explains that these practices are not legalistic rules or formulas for success, but rather means of grace that will enable us to experience God's power and presence in fresh ways. He says that these practices will also prepare us for the ultimate goal of the radical experiment, which is to join God's global mission.

The Global Mission

Platt devotes several chapters of his book to expose the urgent need for Christians to be involved in God's global mission. He reveals some shocking statistics about the state of world evangelization, such as:

  • There are over 6.7 billion people in the world today, and nearly 4.5 billion of them are non-Christians.

  • There are over 1.5 billion Muslims in the world today, and only 0.001 percent of them are evangelical Christians.

  • There are over 6,000 unreached people groups in the world today, which means that they have little or no access to the gospel.

  • There are over 26,000 children who die every day of preventable causes, such as hunger, disease, and poverty.

Platt challenges us to consider how we can use our resources, talents, and opportunities to make a difference in the world for God's glory. He says that we are not called to sit back and watch the world go to hell, but to go and make disciples of all nations. He says that we are not called to live comfortable and safe lives, but to take risks and make sacrifices for the sake of the gospel. He says that we are not called to be spectators, but participants in God's global mission.

The Personal Implications

In the final chapters of his book, Platt discusses some of the personal implications of living a radical life for Jesus. He addresses some of the common questions and objections that people might have, such as:

  • What about my family and friends who don't share my passion for God's mission?

  • What about my career and education that I have worked hard for?

  • What about my church and community that I belong to?

  • What about my personal preferences and desires that I enjoy?

Platt acknowledges that following Jesus with radical obedience and sacrifice will not be easy or popular. He admits that it will require us to make some hard decisions and face some difficult challenges. He warns us that we might face opposition, persecution, or even death for our faith.

However, he also reminds us of the rewards and joys of living a radical life for Jesus. He assures us that we will experience God's presence, power, and provision in amazing ways. He promises us that we will see God's kingdom advance and His glory revealed among the nations. He invites us to join him in a radical adventure of following Jesus with everything we have and everything we are.
