Objectives: This study focuses mainly on the efficacy of once daily application of 4% Hydroquinone and 0.75% Kojic Acid cream (containing 0.75% Kojic acid and 2.5% vitamin C) so as to determine an effective modality of treatment for facial melasma.

Materials and methods: A total number of 60 patients with facial melasma attending the Out-patient department of Dermatology, Venerology and Leprosy, Fr. Muller Medical College Hospital, Mangalore from Oct 2008-April 2010 were studied. Patients were allocated alternately to group A and group B. Group A patients received 4% Hydroquinone cream and group B patient received a Kojic Acid cream (which contained 0.75% Kojic acid and 2.5% vitamin C) and were advised to apply topically once daily at night. Patients were followed up on 4(th), 8(th) and 12(th) week. At each visit side effects were noted and clinical response to treatment was calculated using the MASI score.

Noticeable symptoms of contact dermatitis are redness, irritation, rashes, swollen skin and discomfort. People with sensitive skin or individuals using kojic acid more than the instructed amount may get contact dermatitis.

Kojic acid is an expert in treating hyperpigmentation or scarring. But you must not use it just to lighten your pigmented skin. If you are using it for any particular skin conditions, you should consult a dermatologist for the best and safest way to use kojic acid.

At 4th, 8th and 12th week of post treatment evaluation of MASI, the mean change in MASI following application of 0.75% KA was less than that of 4% HQ, which was statistically highly significant. These results were in contrast to those with Garcia and Fulton[13] wherein glycolic acid with 5% KA showed better efficacy (28%) compared to glycolic acid with 5% HQ (21%). However their results were not statistically significant unlike ours where there was a statistically highly significant difference between HQ and KA, the former being better. The possible explanation for this could be that the addition of Glycolic Acid might have potentiated the action of Kojic Acid, both being acids.

Kojic Acid benefits the skin by helping to eliminate and reduce the appearance of dark spots and uneven skin tone from sun damage, freckles and aging while it gently exfoliates the skin. A. Since kojic acid also doubles up as a mild AHA, it can help give your skin the proper exfoliation needed for vitamin C to work its magic on dark spots and dullness. This combination can help fade stubborn pigmentation marks and give you an even-toned complexion with a radiant finish.

A. Yes, most kojic acid soaps are formulated by combining the gentle ingredient with other nourishing compounds like vitamin E and glycerin. This makes kojic acid soaps less drying, with its foaming lather cleaning your skin from within.

Don't Use With: While it does have a synergetic effect when used with these other brightening/exfoliating ingredients, pairing it with these also increases the likelihood of experiencing excessive dryness or irritation. Proceed with caution and start using any products that contain kojic acid and other actives gradually, giving your skin some time to acclimate.

Kojic acid is a by-product in the fermentation process of manufacturing sake (Japanese rice wine). It is produced naturally by several species of fungi and acts as a chelating agent. Kojic acid when applied topically is a mild inhibitor of the formation of pigment in melanocytes and has the potential use as a chelating agent for wound healing and prevention of photodamage. Since it oxidizes easily in air, kojic acid is best packaged into an airless pump bottle. Clinical studies are limited, however no adverse events have been reported to the FDA at this time.

Tri-Luma is a commercially available topical cream containing hydroquinone 4%, tretinoin 0.05%, and fluocinolone acetonide 0.01%.8 Patients that would benefit from the administration of alternative concentrations of hydroquinone and/or tretinoin as well as those that may need the addition of kojic acid or a less potent steroid may opt for this compounded preparation as determined by a prescriber. Common formulations prepared at Galleria Medical Pharmacy include but are not limited to:

Kojic acid brightens and lightens skin tone by inhibiting melanin production. Melanin is the pigment that gives color to the skin, eyes, and hair. Our body produces melanin with the help of an amino acid called tyrosine, so kojic acid inhibits the function of tyrosine, which, in turn, effects and reduces melanin production, and as a result, skin appears light and bright. But your skin will appear light as long as you continue using kojic acid. The brightness will not reduce as soon as you stop, it will take a few month for your skin to remove to its normal skin tone. 041b061a72
